Nurse Aide Training

The training requirements to become a CNA, QMA, or RHHA differ for these three types of aides. Nurse aide (CNA) training programs consist of at least 30 hours of classroom instruction and 75 hours of clinical training. The qualified medication aide (QMA) training programs consist of at least 100 hours of training which include 60 hours of classroom instruction and 40 hours of supervised practicum. For registered home health aides, the certified agencies develop training programs which consist of classroom and supervised practical training totaling at least 75 hours with at least 16 hours devoted to supervised practical training. The home health aide being trained must complete at least 16 hours of classroom training before beginning the supervised practical training. The training of home health aides pursuant to a continuing education program must be performed by or under the general supervision of a registered nurse (RN). The home health agency must maintain sufficient documentation to demonstrate that the continuing education requirements of home health aides are met.

What does it mean to be a Certified Nurse Aide?

In Indiana the term certified nurse aide is given to those caregivers who meet the following three criteria: have attended and successfully passed a nurse aide training course in Indiana, have passed both the written and the hands-on sections of the CNA exam and are registered in good standing with the Indiana State Nurse Aide Registry. The Indiana Nurse Aide Registry is part of the Indiana State Department of Health. The nurse aide registry contains the names of certified nurse aides who are legally allowed to hold nurse aide jobs in Indiana. Every CNA employed in long term care facilities, home health care, and hospices must be listed in the nurse aide registry. Facilities that employ certified nurse aides use the Registry to confirm that the future nurse aide employee does indeed qualify to work as a certified caregiver.

There are very few nurse aide programs offered by universities in the state of Indiana. The student interested in pursuing a high-quality nursing assistant education at an affordable price should seriously consider the one offered by Purdue University Calumet Resource Center. Each nurse aide course offered at Purdue University starts in February and ends in April of each year. The program is certified by the state of Indiana and requires 105 hours to complete. Thirty hours will be spent studying fundamental nursing concepts in a classroom environment while 75 hours will be dedicated to clinical training in various settings.

Nurse aide students will attend clinical practice sessions at health care facilities throughout Northwest Indiana and the Chicagoland area. At the completion of the program students will be comfortable to apply theoretical concepts and perform the skills required for an entry level nurse aide position. The tuition for this nurse aide course is $475. Those who are interested in applying should register and obtain any additional information from the Department of Nursing at the Purdue University Calumet Resource Center.
