What are the Federal requirements for Certified Nurse Aides?
Federal requirements are different depending on the employment setting of a certified nurse assistant. The law requires every state to maintain a registry of certified nurse aides working in nursing homes. If you are a nurse aide employed by a home health care agency and providing home care then you do not have to be listed on the state registry. In addition, CNAs working in hospitals are exempt from any federal requirements related to certification, training, competency evaluation, or being listed on the state registry. Please note that Federal requirements for nursing aides are different than those required by the State of Indiana which requires every CNA employed in a hospice, long term care facility, or home health care to be listed on the nurse aide registry.
