Why is there a shortage of Certified Nurse Aides in Indiana?

The reasons leading to a limited number and high turnover of certified nurse aides in Indiana are easy to see when we take a look at the nurse aide job requirements and the rewards such a job offers. One important reason is the increasing acuity of the patients CNAs care for, which means patients have increased medical needs and require extensive care while CNA salaries, training and advancement opportunities did not increase much. Other factors leading to a shortage of nursing aides are low wages and few benefits as well as heavy physical demands of the job combined with a non-supportive work environment.
